How do I stitch those tiny snowflakes?

I’ve received a few letters recently where you, my dear cross-stitchers asked how I stitch those small 3x3 snowflakes. So, I’ve prepared a small “How to” lesson.

To begin with, let’s choose a 3x3 square, to “place” our future snowflake. Then, let’s “fill” the corners of the square with 4 cross-stitches.

The next step is to outline the outer sides of each cross-stitch with backstitches (I’ve used different colors to make it more clear).

Now let’s join diagonally the inner corner of one cross-stitch with backstitches, outlining the other corner of the opposite cross-stitch, just like it is shown in the image.

In the selfsame way we are to join all cross-stitches between themselves.

You’ll get another variant of the 3x3 snowflake, when only doing backstitches. Just like the one in the picture.

And there in one more variant of my tiny snowflakes, I’ve used in “My Fair Snowlady” pattern. It’s a fast and easy 2x2 snowflake.

This time we are to choose the center of the future snowflake firstly (it will coincide with the center of a normal cross-stitch) and let’s join it with the centers of the “neighboring” cross-stitches, like in the picture below.

And the last step is to “place” a nice cross-stitch above.
